Leaflet printing... did you know...?!

A few facts you may not know about leaflet printing...

A leaflet usually consists of a printed sheet of paper not larger than international standard A4 in size. Leaflets are used to convey information and are commonly used by companies, organisations and individuals to advertise, products, services, events and activities.

Leaflets can take many forms and are described in various ways. Small leaflets used to promote bars or nightclubs are commonly referred to as flyers. Leaflets overprinted with an individual's address and distributed by post are usually classed as direct (or junk) mail. A folded leaflet is sometimes referred to as a pamphlet, whereas some people class a high quality leaflet printed onto thick paper as a brochure.

Leaflets are not defined in UK law but HM Customs and Revenue state that leaflets normally:

  • consist of a single sheet of paper not greater than international standard A4 in size;

  • are intended to be held in the hand for reading by individuals (rather than for hanging up for general display);

  • convey information;

  • are supplied in sufficient quantity (at least 50 copies) to permit general distribution;

  • and will either be of an ephemeral nature (designed to be read a few times and then thrown away) or be designed to accompany some other product or service, for example an instruction leaflet.

In the UK most leaflets are classed as VAT zero rated.
